It is the process of adding nitrogen and carbon to the surface of steel parts in the gaseous atmosphere of both dissociated ammonia and carrion gas with low carbon potential. This process is performed mainly to offer an anti-wear resistance on surface layer and to improve fatigue resistance.

Nitrocarburizing is a shallow case variation of the nitriding process. While it can be applied to the same materials, as is nitriding, it can also be applied to unalloyed materials, where good wear resistance and some improved fatigue resistance are needed at a low cost. It is widely used for stampings, as an alternative to hard plating or even carbonitriding.

The nitro carburizing process improves corrosion resistance, and an even greater increase is seen in low alloyed and unalloyed steels after this treatment. During post-oxidation, a thin FE3O4 layer is formed on the outer compound layer and, at the same time, the pores are sealed with oxide. Often the corrosion resistance is better than obtainable with other surface engineering processed, such as hard chrome or nickel plating.
